History

Oxford Methodists began worshiping at our current site in 1813, which makes us over 200 years old. Located two blocks from Miami University, many university students find us to be a welcome church home during their college years. We also have a number of Miami faculty and staff in the congregation. Other members live in the city and have no connection with the university. Still others live in the agricultural areas surrounding Oxford. Our congregation ranges in age from infants to nearly 100 years old. This breadth of background and experience leads to a rich diversity of religious experience among congregational members. At OUMC you’re welcome no matter where you are in life and in your journey with God.

Focus

The United Methodist Church is an 11-million-strong global church that opens hearts, opens doors and opens minds through active engagement with our world. John Wesley and the early Methodists placed primary emphasis on Christian living, on putting faith and love into action. This emphasis on what Wesley referred to as “practical divinity” continues to be a hallmark of our congregation today. We invite you to learn more about our rich theological heritage by visiting http://www.umc.org.

The United Methodist Church does not require that its members subscribe to a closely detailed system of beliefs. There is agreement, however, on the most basic issues regarding the Christian faith. We adhere to John Wesley’s dictum:

In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; and in all things, charity.

Our church has a long history of supporting missions and undertaking service to others at the local, national and international level. Congregational members are provided with ample opportunities to put their faith to work in many ways. We also strive to care for one another at the personal level, especially in times of need.

The Six Values of Oxford UMC

Christ-Centered

We are Christ-Centered because we want to be a community that adores and serves the Risen Christ, our Lord.

Scripture-based

We are Scripture-based because we want to be a community that reads scripture together and roots ourselves in the power of God’s Word.

Intergenerational

We are Intergenerational because we want to be a community that seeks the value in having relationships with all members, learning from one another, and helping each other, young and old, to grow in our faith and service to Christ.

Intercultural

We are Intercultural because we want to be a community that sees difference not as a hinderance to the Kingdom but an essential feature of it. The value here is not to diminish difference but to cherish it, and learn to listen to how the Spirit of God speaks through all cultures.

Intentional

We are Intentional because we want to be a community that seeks opportunities to fellowship with one another, grow together, and serve our community together as the Body of Christ.

Caring Connection

We are a Caring Connection because we want to be a community that cares for one another, prays for one another, and supports one another as we fulfill the Law of Christ.
