"Giving Our Hearts Away"
A Sharing of American Indian Presence
Overview
You are invited to share a taste of living American Indian culture on Saturday, November 14 (noon to 5:00 pm) and Sunday, November 15 (1:00 pm to 6:00 pm), 2009, at the Oxford Community Arts Center.
James Alexander Thom, an award-winning and best-selling historical novelist and author of THE RED HEART, a story of the Miami People, will be a featured guest speaker. Representatives of several American Indian nations will share their history and traditional stories, perform traditional Drum songs, cedar flute music and Pow Wow dances, provide insights into herbal and spiritual healing and demonstrate ancient pottery forms and techniques and bead and quill work. Modern American Indian art will be on display. A panel will discuss current issues American Indian people face in the United States.
Activities for children will be another feature of the program. Each participating child will receive a gift. Ancient American Indian art forms will be displayed throughout November at The Lane Public Library in Oxford. American Indian storytelling will be featured during November at the library and in the Talawanda School District.
The event is intended for all persons of all ages and is free to the public due to the generosity of the Oxford Community Arts Center and grants from the West Ohio Conference United Methodist Committee on Native American Ministries, O’Yes! and the Oxford United Methodist Church (OUMC) Endowment Fund. Members of the
OUMC congregation will serve as hosts for program speakers and artists during the event.
