Today we will be looking at how Jesus responded to the second temptation by the devil. Remember that Jesus was not taken into the wilderness against his will but was led by the Holy Spirit. Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit, chose to be in the wilderness. It was not a place of loneliness for him. But, it is a place of prayer and communion with God the father and the Holy Spirit. When we are in the presence of God our spiritual eyes are wide open to how the devil plays trick with our lives.
Matthew 4:5-7 (NIV)
5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: “‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” 7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
Have you ever had a pebble in your shoe? “It isn’t the mountains ahead to climb that wear you out; it is the pebble in your shoe (Muhammad Ali).”
One of the ways the devil works is to slip a pebble of doubt in our hearts about the goodness of God. It is in the quietness of wilderness under the guidance of the Holy Spirit we identify the pebble in the shoe and deal with it.
